Climate change has become one of the greatest global concerns, directly affecting biodiversity and ecosystems, especially in estuarine, coastal, and oceanic regions. These areas are vital not only because of their rich biodiversity, but also because they are fundamental to the local economy. Climate change also intensifies extreme weather events, such as storms and floods in southern Brazil and severe droughts in the North, with major impacts on the populations living in these regions. These extreme events are expected to intensify over the coming decades, leading to sea-level rise as a result of global warming and to increased aquatic contamination, affecting estuarine, coastal, and oceanic ecosystem services.
FURG, the Network’s coordinating institution, has extensive expertise in this field, both through graduate programs of excellence and research groups (e.g., the National Institute of Science and Technology – National Ocean Observation and Monitoring Network; Interinstitutional Center for Observation and Forecasting of Extreme Events – CIEX). In addition, the institutions that make up the Network conduct research across multiple fronts, focusing on assessing the impacts of climate change and extreme events on local and regional natural ecosystems and human populations. At the same time, they carry out studies aimed at mitigating these effects, taking into account the diversity of socio-environmental contexts involved.
The theme is aligned with the Climate Plan, the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, and SDGs 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Furthermore, the inclusion of emerging and developing graduate programs contributes to reducing academic and regional disparities, reinforcing the Network’s commitment to equitable internationalization and to socially relevant scientific impact, in line with global socio-environmental challenges.
